Dr. Alexis Campbell
Science Bound Director, Iowa State University
When she’s not busy chasing her daughter Mya around the playground, Dr. Alexis Campbell, a Des Moines native and resident, is empowering Iowa students of color to pursue degrees and careers in agricultural, science, technology, engineering and mathematics through her role as Science Bound Director.
Science Bound, established in 1990, is Iowa State University’s (ISU) premier pre-college program designed to meet our state and national need for a technical workforce by increasing the number of ethnically and racially diverse Iowa students who earn ASTEM (agriculture, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) degrees.
“We tap into talented middle and high school students and their families in Des Moines, Denison and Marshalltown and encourage them to participate in our nine-year program, which begins in 8th grade. It is a scholarship program, so students must meet Science Bound’s requirements, such as maintaining a high GPA, being a leader within and outside of the classroom and participating in over 400 hours of ASTEM and career preparation work. Young people who successfully meet these requirements have earned a 4-year tuition scholarship to Iowa State if they pursue an ASTEM degree between 8th grade and college graduation. Science Bound’s 4-way partnership model includes ISU, local school districts, community industry partners and their families who commit to the students’ academic success.”
Alexis holds a B.S. degree in biology and Ph.D. degree in Plant Biology from Iowa State University. And most recently, she served as an Associate Scientist and Graduate Faculty member within the Roy J Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology and the NSF Center for Biorenewable Chemicals (CBiRC).
