Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. plans to invest more than $110 million over the next four years to expand its facilities in Ames and Fort Dodge, Iowa. BIVI is a world leader in developing, manufacturing and marketing an extensive line of biological and pharmaceutical products for its core segments: cattle, swine, horses and pets.
BIVI’s Ames $12 million expansion project includes a new 53,000 square foot facility at the expanding Iowa State University Research Park. The new facility will allow the company to expand efforts across its target species markets and continue to research other diseases with an unmet therapeutic need for larger livestock and enhance privacy. The growth announcement is just the latest in BIVI’s successful Ames tenure, which involves deep collaboration with Iowa State University faculty and institutes, began with the acquisition of NOBL Laboratories’ Ames operation in 1999.
In Fort Dodge, BIVI is planning a nearly $100 million project to expand capacity and modernize operations. The enhancements include the addition of a new line in its freeze drying unit and a separate high speed fill and freeze dry suite; improvements to the performance of aging systems, equipment and other plant assets to increase the facility’s overall competitiveness; and the construction of a new Veterinary Research Center.
Economic development financial assistance packages from the Iowa Economic Development Authority as well as local entities helped secure both Fort Dodge and Ames expansions. The financial assistance packages include tax credits from the state’s High Quality Jobs program.
